Hello everyone!
I have seen that literature review is one of the most talked about topics in various discussion sites. But how difficult can it be to explore previous studies? Turns out that it’s HORRIBLY, EXCRUCIATINGLY DIFFICULT!!
It’s such a pain to write man! And the universities demands are too high. They just want it to be perfect. I have to submit my work in stages, chapter-wise, and my good-for-nothing professor has rejected my LR two damn times! I have written 10,000 words of LR and she wants it more elaborative! I mean, who the hell is gonna read 10,000 words of bullshit? Moreover, its difficult to find more literature, you don’t have access to every file, and I can’t afford buying them. I am so frustrated, being stuck at a stupid chapter! Am I alone at this, or are there others who feel the same?

Hey, you are so not alone at this. Even I am stuck at the literature review, it always comes back with more revisions. You know, people say that you don’t have to be perfect and just write it down. That’s not true, a dissertation needs to be ‘perfect’.
In my case, the LR has been rejected 3 times and I am still making the revisions. It’s tricky, you know, writing about someone else’s research in your words and then find those relevant gaps. -

I think LR is the most important part of any research. It requires extensive investigation to figure out the research gap. Also, it is pretty painful. I did a lot of reading for this and after few remarks (which is normal) I got it through. If you want to understand how to write a good LR, Check out this link:

And I think I am in love with this website, it’s quite resourceful for any research work, regarding methodologies, statistics, etc. Most importantly, it’s absolutely free!

Thank you for the help. I understand what an LR is about but how should I go about it, as it has already been rejected twice.

Have you tried segregating it? For making it look more presentable? You can also put you work in a matrix form, that’s elaborate enough.

I have divided my LR into sections on the basis of my objectives. I don’t think that I should use matrix; that might backfire on me. I think I lack a good conceptual framework. Any inputs for that?

In order to develop an impressive literature review, work on your conceptual framework, if you have one. Conceptual frameworks help the researchers view the phenomena of interest more acutely; to see details that otherwise might not be apparent. Try to limit the scope of your study and concentrate more on the research problem. A good conceptual framework can increase the value of your chapter.

Before re-writing it for the third time, just sit back and relax and ask few questions to yourself. Like, what type of LR am I conducting, what is the scope of my research? Have I gathered information from all the sources and discussed studies contrary to my studies? Have I critically evaluated my Literature Review?
It’s okay to be stuck, you know. Not everyone gets it right in the start. I wrote it several times due, my supervisor always asked me to make revisions. If you’ll just include all these points and answer the questions that I think it’ll turn out okay. All the best 🙂

Thanks a lot for the replies. Though I still find it difficult to make a conceptual framework. Could someone explain the different types of variables to me?

You can take a look at this post I found for understanding the basics of conceptual framework and how to develop one. It also explains the different kinds of variables with examples. I am sharing the link below, you can have a look.

This article is given by University of New Zealand and describes each and every aspect of literature review writing. I think it’ll be useful, it’s quite comprehensive. Hope you find it relevant.

You need to identify the relevant variables of your study from the synthesis of your literature review. Identifying independent variables and dependent variable will suffice, where independent is the one who is not affected by any other factor or variable and dependent is the one that can alter with the interference of another variable. And in the conceptual framework, you need to show how these variables connect with each other as per your understanding. It’s basically how you will pursue your research.
