Hello everyone. I am on my data collection phase and I need to develop a questionnaire for evaluating the employability skills required by young graduates to land a job and how are they provided with such skills. Though I settled on mixed approach, I am not too sure about it. Which type of questionnaire will be better and how should I make one?

Both of these methods have their own pros and cons. You settled on mixed approach before. Why do you now think it’s a bad idea?

I am not sure about it. I think it will create problem for me during analysis as I would have to separately analyse quantitative data and qualitative data. Won’t that be tedious?

I know its tiring to separately analyse quantitative and qualitative data, so before you end up with the wrong one you should be well aware of the benefits of the both the questionnaire. Whereas quantitative questionnaire states your research problem in a specific term and clearly specifies the independent and dependent variable of your research, Qualitative gives you a more nuance feeling which cannot be expressed in numerical data and give you a flexible approach in terms of data collection, analysis and interpretation of the collected information.
So, you need to analyse which method will suit your research questions.

I’ll rather suggest you to use a combination of Qualitative and Quantitative questionnaire which can improve your scale of evaluation by ensuring that the limitation of one type of data is balanced by the strength of another. Trust me it’s worth a try!

Thanks for the blog Austin and all of you who replied.

I am going to make a quantitative questionnaire. My supervisor (though useless) suggests the same. So, I would need some tips for developing a good quantitative questionnaire. Like I know that likert scale is to be used, but when to apply it and how is a bit hazy. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

You are right, likert scale is used for building a quantitative questionnaire. There are various types of measurements that you can use such scales, 3-scale, 5-scale and 7-scale. And I’ll also advice that you lookout for some research documents of your field where questionnaires are used as a research method. You can take help from there.
