Hi your research sounds interesting as well as intriguing, humanistic studies is undoubtedly a complex domain for research. As much you have manged to describe about your research here, on the basis of it I am unable to suggest a precise research methodology. However currently there are innumerable studies being conducted on tribal communities of South America and Native Americans, using ingenious ways that to communicate and understand the tribal culture as well as people. The following portals might help you get a number of research papers, which might as well give you a chance to evaluate the various methodologies employed in these papers and then work your way through it.

To create a flawless rationale for your study, there are three things you need to keep in mind. First, find out gaps in the literature and find out how you can eliminate those gaps with your contribution in the research study you are going to present. Disposal of gaps in the present writing is one of the mandatory prerequisites for your examination. Second, the examination can be led to take care of a particular issue. You need to clarify the essence of the problem in a comprehensive manner and feature reasonable advantages related with the solution of the problem. Third, the study of research needs to add to the level of expert advancement of the researcher. You need to explain in what ways this research adds to the accomplishment of your aspirations in detailed way.

If you are seeking funds from BBSRC, then before writing grants, first check if you are eligible for it or not! As far as I know, they fund only those who are employed as a junior researcher or at least a contract of lecturer level or equivalent that extends to beyond the duration of the proposed grant. I would advise you first to check your eligibility!
